Where else to look for information

Your dissertation will focus on a specialised area of research so it is possible that the Library won't have access to all the research materials you need.

You may find that searching for your topic brings back few results so you may want to consider searching beyond the Library's collection. You may also find that we don't have access to the article or book that you need - if this is the case you are able to find the article online or request it. Click on the tabs to see our top tips on where else to search and how to get material not in the Library.

While Google is great for finding out everyday information it is not so good when searching for academic information. There are a number of alternative search engines you might want to try

  • Google Scholar - an academic version of the popular search engine.
  • Core - searches open access material from repositories and journals worldwide.
  • Base Search  operated by Bielefeld University Library this is a search engine specially for academic web resources.

It is also worth searching to see if there are any useful books that are not stocked in the Library. As well as searching online booksellers look at:

If there are book titles that would be useful you can request these through Inter Library Loans or suggest that the Library purchase them.

You may also find it useful to look at doctoral theses EThos provides access to over 400,000 - it will be particular useful to look at the reference list of any useful thesis and follow these up.

If you have a specific article or book that you know will be useful for your dissertation but you can't access try the following:

  •  Look for the item on the internet - it is possible that it might be freely available via Google Scholar.
  • See if you can find an email address for the author - if you contact them directly they maybe happy to send you a copy of their article

If you are still unable to get hold of a copy you can request an Inter Library Loan where we will try and get the material from the British Library or another university. There is a cost implication to the Library so make sure that you have read the abstract/ reviews so that you know it will be useful for your research.
