GeoMapping Unit: Home

The rapid growth in the acquisition and use of geospatial data now applies to many disciplines and this unit offers expertise in GIS, map/illustration design, GPS, terrain modelling, air photo interpretation and other areas.

Introduction

The GeoMapping Unit is based within and funded by SoGEES (School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences).
It primarily, but not exclusively, serves staff and students in these areas.

Map/illustration design and production for staff
The unit provides this service for staff research, publications and teaching. Deadlines reflect the complexity of the task, our current workload and the required publication/conference date.

Supporting and teaching students
All staff in the GeoMapping Unit work with students providing advice on map production and design for coursework and projects. Make an appointment with the appropriate team member.
Between us we also teach different aspects of digital cartography and GIS, map interpretation, field mapping and aerial photo interpretation.

Spatial data collection and analysis
Advice and help is available on field data capture (eg GPS receivers) and the possibilities for analysis (eg ESRI ArcGIS), again through timetabled lectures and practicals but also at an individual level.

Paper maps and air photographs
Collections of paper maps covering topography, soils and many other themes are based in the Davy Building, 708. Loan conditions will vary depending upon the collection involved. We have full O.S.map UK coverage of the UK at 1:50,000 (Landranger) and 1:25,000 (Explorer). These maps are available for loan.

Geology maps, memoirs reports and other publications are held in the Geology Map Room, 005, Fitzroy Building. You will also find here a large collection of aerial photography is used in practical classes and for independent field mapping.

Geography undergraduate dissertations
Past dissertations from the last four years of Geography programmes are available to browse from Davy 708. Dissertations are also available from some other programmes in the School. Please enquire for more details.
