Disability Support in the Library

AccessAble

AccessAble is a website that gives you detailed information about location's accessibility. You can see Charles Seale-Hayne library's accessibility information here.

Library Lifts

All areas of the Charles Seale-Hayne Library are accessible by an internal lift.

To gain access to the main entrance on Level 1 there is a platform lift in the foyer area on Level 0.

Security Gates

The main entrance on level 1 has security gates, including a designated gate for wheelchair users. To enter and exit the building, you will need to scan your University ID card at the gates.

Library Toilets

Accessible toilets can be found on Level 0, Level 1, Level 2 and  Level 3.

Blue Badge Holders

The University makes provision for blue badge holders.  Contact Sarah Haywood for more information: S.Haywood@plymouth.ac.uk or 01752 588413.

Fire Refuge Points

Fire Refuge Points are situated on the staircases on all levels of the Library.

What to do in an emergency:

  • If an alarm sounds you should make your way out of the building and follow directions from staff to a Fire Assembly point.  All fire doors will unlock automatically.
  • Lifts must not be used. Fire Refuge Points are situated on the staircases on all levels of the Library.
  • Anyone with physical disabilities can go to a designated place of safety/refuge point i.e. on a staircase. If a wheelchair will not fit into the refuge area, the wheelchair user will be helped out of the wheelchair to the place of safety.
  • An intercom system allows two-way communication between the refuge area and the fire panel area on Level 0. Library staff will go to the fire panel as soon as possible after the alarm sounds to communicate with those left in a refuge. The fire brigade will be informed of the whereabouts of any disabled users unable to evacuate the building. Security staff have an Evac-Chair and are trained in its use.
