Fact Checking and Ethical Considerations

Key things to remember if you are using AI

  • It is important to fact-check the information you receive from the AI tool to ensure that it is not false.
  • AI tools should only be used as a supplement to your research, not as a replacement.
  • AI should be used ethically and in guidance with university student regulations. If you are unsure, then it is important that you follow instructions from your lecturers.
  • By using AI in a way which might undermine your skills as a university student, you will not be achieving their learning outcomes, so it may affect your academic development.

Be aware that the test datasets may not be up to date, each generative AI tool is pulling its data from a defined test set predominantly from the internet.

ChatGPT recommends that in order to access the most current and up-to-date information, it's recommended to consult trusted news sources, websites, or experts in the field.

ChatGPT states,

“There is limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021 and as an AI language model, I am constantly learning and updating my knowledge based on the vast amount of data that is available to me. My training data includes web pages, books, articles, and other sources of information, up to a certain point in time (my knowledge cut off is 2021-09). However, I am also able to access new information as it becomes available on the internet. So while I am not aware of events or developments that have occurred after my knowledge cutoff date, I am constantly learning and updating my knowledge within that timeframe (Open AI's ChatGPTMar23 Version, 2023).

No further changes:

You've summarized it perfectly! As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, I don't have information on events, developments, or changes in the world that occurred after that date. However, I can still provide information and answer questions to the best of my knowledge within that timeframe. Keep in mind that I won't be aware of any events or developments that have happened in the world since then, and my responses will be based on the information available up to that point. (Open AI's ChatGPTSep23 Version, 2023)

Use AI with CAUTION

Risks with using information from ChatGPT

Information obtained from ChatGPT should not be considered a primary source and should be used in conjunction with other sources.

Additionally, since AI models can sometimes produce incorrect or biased information, it's crucial to verify information obtained from ChatGPT with other sources before including it in your work.

Use AI with CAUTION (a useful acronym):

  • C - Check your prompts. The information you get out is only as good as the requests you put in.
  • A - Approach any information the AI tool produces cautiously (be a critical reader).
  • U - Understand that Large Language Models (including ChatGPT) are designed only to summarise,      predict and generate texts. They won’t do the thinking for you.
  • T - Take the time to verify any claims made and check the reliability of any sources.
  • O - Observe the principles of Good Academic Practice at all times.
  • N - Never submit chunks of text produced by AI as your own work. You may be in breach of the academic conduct regulations.
