A Support Guide for Academic Staff

Adding resources to your list

To import citations from outside Primo (a website, for example) into your Leganto lists, you will need to install the 'Cite it' tool:

Click here for instructions to install 'Cite It!

Adding a book or ebook to your list

If an item (a book, journal or journal article etc.) is available through Primo, you should use this method of adding resources to ensure that your students are correctly authenticated when accessing the item through your list.

1. Click on the ADD ITEMS + button at the top of the list.

2. This will open a panel to the right of your list. Click the ‘Library Search’ tab to find any resources held by the Library (including books, ebooks, articles and journals) to add to your list. Recommendation: if you are searching for a book(s) change the Search in field to search only for Books, Journal titles etc.

3. Click on the item you would like to add. You can:

  1. Drag and drop the item directly into the list, or
  2. Select a section of your list from the drop-down menu and click on ADD or ADD & EDIT if you wish to check the item details first.

N.B. If several results for the same item are found, e.g. different editions, or print items and an eBook, make sure you choose the record you wish your students to see. If it indicates that additional versions are available, always click to see - you might otherwise miss an eBook version or a later edition.

Once you have finished adding items, click the X to hide the search panel.

Adding an ejournal

If an item (a book, journal or journal article etc.) is available through Primo, you should use this method of adding resources to ensure that your students are correctly authenticated when accessing the item through your list.

1. Click on the ADD ITEMS + button at the top of the list.

2. This will open a panel to the right of your list. Use the ‘Library Search’ tab to find any resources held
by the Library (including books, ebooks, articles and journals) to add to your list. Recommendation: if you are searching for a journal article(s) change the Search in field to search only for Articles.

3. Click on the item you would like to add. You can:

a) Drag and drop the item directly into the list, or

b) Select a section of your list from the drop-down menu and click on ADD or ADD & EDIT if you wish to check the item details first.

Once you have finished adding items, click the X to hide the search panel.

Adding a website

1. Make sure the list you want to add to is open. In another tab or window, go to a website (e.g. www.plymouth.ac.uk) you would like to add to your list.
2. Click on the Cite It! button installed in your bookmarks toolbar. (Click here for instructions to install 'Cite It!')
3. This will open an ‘Add this to my list’ pop-up window. Leganto will automatically fill in as much information as possible about  the resource. Check and modify this information if necessary. Change the Type field to Website if necessary.
4. At the bottom of the pop-up window:
         a. Select Add to: List.
         b. Select your Reading List from the drop-down menu or start typing in the List title and select.
         c. Select the required section of your list.
         d. Click ADD & CLOSE.

Adding an item manually

You can also add items to a list manually if you wish (N.B. this is not generally recommended; where possible, items should be added using the options above, although there may be circumstances in which you may need to add items manually):-

  • Click on the ADD ITEMS + button at the top of the list.
  • In the panel that opens on the right, click the Blank Form tab.
  • Enter the details of the item as required and click ADD or ADD & CLOSE.

Adding an item to your Collection

You can also choose to add an item to your Collection rather than a List. Your Collection can be accessed via the top left hand corner menu in Leganto  and acts as your personal library of useful items and links that you can add to any List(s) at a later date.

To do this, simply go to your Collection, click ADD ITEMS, then in the right hand panel select the Library Search tab. Select the item you wish to add, click onto it and click the ADD button.

Likewise, you can add items from outside Primo such as website by using the Cite It! tool as decribed in the Adding a website section above, or add an item manually.

Publish your list

Once you have finished adding items to your List, and you are ready for your students to see it, you will need to publish it to ensure that it can be seen on the module page:-

  • Simply click the Publish button at the top of your list. You can "unpublish" a list at any time simply by clicking the three dots at the top right of the list and selecting unpublish.

You will also need to ensure that the List is associated with the correct module to make it visible on the module page. Instructions for this can be found here.
