Publisher policies on depositing book chapters
Often publishers will allow authors to make one chapter of their work Open Access in an institutional repository (such as PEARL). This will usually be the accepted manuscript, although some publishers allow authors to deposit the Version of Record. An embargo may also be required.

Some publishers may not have clear Open Access policies. It is always worth requesting permission to make the accepted version of a chapter of your work open access in PEARL.
Below are just a few examples of publishers' current policies on the deposit of book chapters (as of April 2021):
- Cambridge University PressThe accepted version or Version of Record of one chapter can be made open access in a repository after an embargo (6 months).
- Oxford University PressThe accepted version of one chapter can be made open access in a repository after a 12 month period for Science and Medical titles or a 24 month period for Academic, Trade and Reference titles.
- Palgrave MacmillanThe accepted version of one chapter can be made open access in a repository after an embargo (24 months).
- Routledge/Taylor & FrancisThe accepted version of one chapter can be made open access on a repository after an embargo (12 months for STEM, 18 months for humanities & social sciences).
- BrillThe accepted version of one chapter can be made open access in a repository immediately upon publication.
- SageThe accepted version of one chapter can be made open access in a repository after an embargo (24 months).
- SpringerThe accepted version of one chapter can be made open access in a repository after an embargo (12 or 24 months depending on the type of book).
- BloomsburyBloomsbury allow a chapter from an authored or co-authored book to be made open access six months after publication. This can be the Accepted Manuscript or Version of Record. Each contributor to an edited collection can archive their own chapter.
