GeoMapping staff are based within and funded by SoGEES (School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences). They primarily, but not exclusively, serve staff and students in these areas.
Supporting students
We work with students providing advice on map production for coursework and projects. We teach different aspects of digital cartography, GIS, map interpretation and field mapping. Shaun Lewin's expertise is in GIS and spatial analysis, whilst Jamie Quinn’s is in map design and cartography. If you don't know who is best to contact, email geomapping@plymouth.ac.uk and the most appropriate person will respond.
Spatial data collection and analysis
Advice and help is available on field data capture (e.g. GPS receivers and drones) and the possibilities for analysis (e.g., QGIS and ArcGIS Pro), again through timetabled lectures and practicals, but also at an individual level. Email shaun.lewin@plymouth.ac.uk or pop into 708 Davy during standard working hours.
Spatial datasets and Digital mapping
For mapping of Great Britain the first point of call is Digimap, which is a web-based service delivering digital map data and high quality cartographic products. The service delivers copyrighted maps and spatial data to Higher Education Institutions free at the point of use for all staff and students. See the tab above for more information and instructions of use. Email james.quinn@plymouth.ac.uk or pop into 708 Davy Building during standard working hours with any digimap-related queries.
Plenty of other digital spatial datasets are available. The majority of these are free but require individual registration – visit our Spatial Data Sources tab for more information.
Mapping Software
Find out about the mapping software available to staff and students on the 'Mapping Software' link, above
Map/illustration design and production for staff
We provide a map production service for staff research, publications and teaching. We also produce most of the University's campus maps here: https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/about-us/visit/our-campuses Email james.quinn@plymouth.ac.uk for campus map or map Illustration enquiries.
