Endnote Online tutorials and support

Using EndNote Online on a University Computer

All university campus based machines, e.g. computers in the Library or teaching rooms, have the Endnote Desktop (software) version installed on them as the University pays for a site-wide licence that also enables Endnote Online and the university styles (Cite Them Right/Humanities) to be offered.

Connecting your Endnote Online account to Microsoft Word

If you are using a University computer, the Endnote tab in Word may be labelled 'Endnote 20' which is the Desktop (software) version of Endnote.  Your library is an Endnote Online, cloud-based, library.  You will need to change the application in Word on the university computer to Endnote Online so that it can connect to your own library of references.  To do this:

  • Click on the 'Preferences' button

  • Go to 'Application'

  • Use the drop-down to select 'Endnote Online'

  • Type your Endnote log-in credentials into the fields below and click 'OK'.

Importing references from databases

Sometimes, when you download references from databases to import them into your Endnote Library, Endnote Desktop springs into action first and puts the reference into an Endnote Desktop library on the campus machine you are using.  This is not your own Endnote Library so you will need to force it to send the reference to Endnote Online:

  • When you export a reference as a .RIS file and it lands at the bottom of your internet window, DO NOT click this file (tempting as this is, this is the action that opens Endnote Desktop)

  • Instead, ignore this file download and go instead to Endnote Online > 'Collect' > 'Import References'

  • Look for the file in your computer's Downloads folder and import according to the relevant database option (see further guidance on adding references)
