The Library, more than books

Opening Times

Remember your University Card

You will need your card to access the main library and Level 0 Learning Space.

Study Spaces

The library has a variety of study areas across four floors to support your learning needs.

This includes Group, Quiet and Silent Study. Visit our Study Areas article for more information.

Bookable study rooms, of varying sizes, are available across all floors. Please see our Bookable Study Rooms article for information about the rooms and how to book.

The whole of Level 3 is a quiet study zone. On Level 2 there are quiet study rooms opposite the lifts next to the South East staircase (the side looking over the SU)

  • Users must work quietly at all times.
  • Mobile phones should be set to silent, although texting etc is allowed. Laptops and other mobile devices can be used with headphones.
  • Be mindful that conversation and other noise can cause annoyance, particularly when passing through an area.

The main group study areas are on Level 1 and Level 2. There are also group tables in the Level 0 atrium.

  • Show respect to other users and keep conversation noise to a reasonable level.
  • Mobile phones and laptops can be used.
  • Be mindful that excessive noise can travel to adjoining areas and cause disturbance to other users.
The Library has PCs and a number of Macs across all floors for students to use on a first-come basis. There is also a large computing area in the Level 0 Learning Space.

This is a swipe access only room (305) on Level 3 for postgraduate students.The room is occasionally used for teaching, which is advertised in advance, and houses the Special Collections.

Laptop Loans

a picture of a student using the lapsafe loaner laptop serviceNeed to borrow a laptop? Laptops are available for loan on Level 1 by the book returns.

The laptops are installed with Microsoft Office, internet browser and can be printed from. For more information, check out the laptop loan self-help article.

Break Room

a picture of the student break room, accessed via level 0Need to take a break? The Break Room has comfortable seating and a kitchenette, equipped with a microwave and boiling water. This space is located on Level 0 and can be accessed via the Level 0 foyer only. You will need to bring your University card to enter. 

Reflection Space

Fiction and Wellbeing Collection

Our new Fiction and Wellbeing Collection. Found on level 1 near the returns area. Immerse yourself in a good book and help promote your relaxation and stress relief

The Writing Café

As well as serving great coffee and locally sourced food, The Writing Café is a welcoming space where you can explore techniques and strategies to improve as a writer.

The Writing Café is a unique and creative space where staff and students are welcome to come and have a conversation with a member of the Student Learning team and work with a trained student Writing Mentor. 

The Writing Café takes place in The Library Café, located on the 1st floor of the Library.

SUM:UP

SUM:UP is a mathematics and statistics support service that gives expert on-demand advice on all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics and statistics, located on Level 1 by the lifts. All students are welcome. Find out more about SUM:UP on their page.
